Business Trip to Australia

Go Global: Business trip to Australia and New Zealand planned for Spring 2019

The State of Delaware and Pennsylvania are partnering to organize a joint business trip to Australia (with an optional add on to New Zealand) this upcoming Spring. The State’s trade representative in Australia, Angela Foley, will perform in-country research and outreach for participating companies. Her team in Australia will set up face-to-face meetings with prospective customers.

Export Delaware is committed to providing the State’s small and medium businesses with a successful business trip.

Your participation on the trip includes:

  • Assistance from in-country trade representative, Angela Foley.
  • Business meetings with distributors, agents, or customers arranged according to your needs.
  • Preparation session, in-country briefing and follow-up support after the trip.

Although these services provided by the State are valued at $6,500 per company, they are financed by the SBA and the State of Delaware. A portion of your travel expenses may even be covered by the STEP Grant, a program by the SBA that will reimburse up to 50 percent of all pre-approved, eligible, export marketing expenses (up to a maximum of $5,000).

Export Delaware partnered with Angela’s team and went on a business trip to Australia last March. Six Delaware businesses participated and took part in a number of meetings in Sydney and Melbourne. As a result of this trip, these businesses project nearly half a million dollars in new export sales!

Here’s what some of the participants are saying:

“Beth Pomper was an amazing advocate and provided clear, organized and structured road map for success.”

– Mary Schreiber Swenson, PhD, mymedchoices, inc.

“Foley & Associates, Delaware’s rep in Australia, set up six meetings. Batta could not personally go to Australia but had teleconference calls and they actually turned out well. We have two good prospects for potential distributorship. Beth and her team did excellent job in planning and executing the minute details.”

– Naresh Batta, Batta Environmental

“The options for distributorship in Australia/New Zealand expanded as a result of the Trade Mission. We anticipate securing partnerships with one and perhaps two distributors who target markets in defense and forensics where we currently do not have brand recognition or sufficient sales growth for our [products].”

– Tom Zawislak, B&W Tek

Why Australia?

The U.S. and Australia share similar language, business and cultural ties and have developed a long-lasting trade relationship supported by a Free Trade Agreement.

Australia’s economy has been strong for many years, and has achieved consistent growth for the past 27 years. It is known as a country that’s easy to do business with, since we share the same language, business and technical standards and legal practices. You may even recognize familiar products and service providers in Australia, as it’s consumer and business base as been well established.

There’s still a lot of opportunity for growth, especially in the sectors that Delaware small businesses specialize in, specifically: energy and resources, agribusiness, financial services, industrial equipment and automated systems, civil engineering and construction, transport planning and equipment, medical device, healthcare and pharmaceutical innovation, IT software for healthcare management, cloud computing and cybersecurity. The Federal Government has launched a national infrastructure plan that includes an investment of about $57 billion in transportation infrastructure.

  • Access to Asia: “International companies can tap into Australia’s deep business and cultural ties with Asia” says Angela Foley. Ten of Australia’s top 12 export markets are within the Asian region.
  • New South Wales: NSW has the strongest economy of the Australian states. The State is particularly strong in financial services, professional, scientific and technical services, property services, information media and telecommunications.
  • Exporting history with Delaware: Australia is ranked as Delaware’s 30th export market globally and 9th export market in the Asia Pacific region. Delaware businesses primarily export computer and electronic products, chemicals, transportation equipment and machinery.
